You Want to Support the RE Program, But You’re Not Ready to Teach . . .
Tell Tina that you’d like to help and what you might like to do, and she can match your skill to the appropriate class or lesson. Here are some suggestions:
Provide an extra set of hands for craft projects
. . . or outdoor projects
Lead a cooking or craft project
Teach kids about a skill or interest of yours (weaving, drawing, architecture . . . ?)
Read a story
Participate in a skit
Play music
Lead a sing-along
Involve kids in a social justice project
Teach a dance
Teach something in another language (including sign language)
Build something with the kids
Provide a snack
Be a chaperone for a sleepover or lock-in
. . . or a field trip
Offer to drive for a field trip
Help with (or volunteer to lead) a One-Room Sunday School
Download music
Lend your tech skills
Be a “buddy” for a child with special needs
Ask the teacher! Different things will always be useful in different grades, for example:
The Nursery can always use extra hands to hold babies
PreK through grade 2 can always use extra hands when the kids go outside
Grade 2 needs volunteers to bring in their pets
Grade 3 can use help with cooking projects
Grade 4 might like performers to help act out Bible stories
Grade 7 always needs drivers to transport kids to local churches
Visit the classroom, and participate as much or as little as you like! Check out the curriculum overview online, and see if a particular topic looks interesting to you.
If you’re still not ready to commit full-time but you’d like a “taste” of teaching, here are some options:
Add your name to our substitute teacher list
Be part of a teaching team—four or more teachers who rotate responsibilities, so
you’re only in the classroom every other Sunday (or sometimes less!)
